Jonathan Douglas b. 1987 is an artist from South Carolina. He began painting and drawing at an early age while apprenticing in his family's picture-framing studio. Growing up within the decorative art market fostered an appreciation for fine art painting.
Painting remained a private pursuit until 2012. He was operating a small antique shop and displayed his paintings to fill the walls of the space. Customers quickly took interest. Encouraged by this response, he began devoting more time to painting.
"I met a lot of interesting people while running my shop. People from all walks of life, and a surprising number of artists, intellectuals, poets, and eccentrics. It was largely their encouragement that led me to pursue a creative career."
In lieu of formal academic training, his art education was found in a decade of rigorous practice and experimentation. He studied the effect of light and the changing seasons by painting en plein air in the fields, swamps, and forests of the Carolinas. His style developed in response to his medium. From 2008-2018 he worked primarily in acrylics and woodblock printing and gradually transitioned to oil paint which remains his preferred medium. His work in the studio is done through digitally arranging photos, supplemental sketches, and imagination.
